Matt Andersens neues Album Weightless
ist Mitte Februar auf Platz 14 der kanadischen Albumcharts eingestiegen – mit bislang über 2 Millionen YouTube-Klicks, mehr als 30.000 verkauften Alben und vielen Musikpreisen, die der kanadische Künstler im Rücken hat, ist das vielleicht nicht ganz so überraschend, aber auf alle Fälle ein schöner Erfolg.
Matt Andersen ist ein großartiger Live-Musiker mit einer gigantischen Soulstimme und einer klasse Bühnenpräsenz. Seine Fans hat er sich auf dem altmodischen Weg erspielt – weltweite Tourneen und Mund-zu-Mund-Propaganda. Weightless ist nun Matts erstes Album beim Label True North Records und fängt seine Musik zwischen Soul, Blues, R&B, Rock und Folk und sein Songwriting-Talent so gut ein wie keins seiner vorherigen Alben. Es wird am 18.04.2014 in Deutschland veröffentlicht.
Als Produzent des neuen Albums hat sich Matt Andersen Grammy-Preisträger Steve Berlin von Los Lobos ins Studio geholt, nicht nur weil er Fan von Los Lobos ist, sondern auch, weil er sein Lieblings-Tragically Hip-Album Phantom Power produziert hat. Berlin wiederum brachte den Gitarristen Paul Rigby mit an Bord, der vor allem über seine Zusammenarbeit mit Neko Case bekannt geworden ist. Wer Andersens Gitarrenkünste kennt, wird sich vielleicht wundern, warum er einen weiteren Gitarristen bei den Aufnahmen dabei haben wollte. Dazu sagt er: „Paul is the kind of guitar player I’m not. He had great melody ideas for arrangements and guitar parts; I had to learn my songs again after Paul was done with them.”
Sein Ruf als „Bluesman“ brachte Matt schon hochkarätige Preise wie den Euro Blues Award for Best Solo / Acoustic Act im Jahr 2013, drei Maple Blues Awards 2012 und 2010 die International Blues Challenge in Memphis ein. „The blues is a big part of what I do, and in my solo show some tunes are straight-up blues, for sure,” sagt er dazu. „But I would never stand beside B.B. King and say, ‘I play blues, too.’ None of my albums are blues albums – I’ve won blues awards with them, but I wouldn’t say they’re blues albums.”
Das wird spätestens klar, wenn man sich „I Lost My Way“ vom neuen Album anhört. Es ist eins von insgesamt zwei Stücken, die Matt gemeinsam mit dem kanadischen Musiker Joel Plaskett geschrieben hat und in dem eine Soul-Gospel-Melodie über einem rockigen Groove steht.
Der nächste Song „My Last Day“ erinnert an Van Morrison und „So Easy“ ist eine Countryballade, die gemeinsam mit David Myles entstand. Mit Dave Gunning, Tom Wilson. Keith Mullins oder Ryan Hupman holte sich Matt Andersen weitere hochkarätige kanadische Musiker für die Aufnahmen ins Studio: „Writing with Joel Plaskett, he’s always thinking about the hook and has a real melodic quality. I like having different angles on there. Dave Gunning is a really great storyteller, so the songs I wrote with him have more of a storytelling kind of vibe. A lot of the tunes I wrote with Keith Mullins were more a different groove than I’m used to; he’s a drummer who played with me a lot, so he brought a different sense of rhythm and phrasing. Writing with Tom Wilson was trying to play catch-up, because he just keeps writing and writing.”
„They’re all people I’d hang around with outside of music, so it’s more friends just doing what friends do,” sagt Andersen und fügt hinzu, dass er keinen erhöhten Druck angesichts seines ersten Albums bei einem international agierenden Label verspürte. „It was nice and relaxed, a great way to write. If I write a whole album by myself it sounds like me too much, where every song sounds the same, and I’m always leery of that. It keeps it fresh for me; every tune has its own personality, which I really like. I realize I write better when I write with someone, it keeps you from settling for a lyric. I go that extra mile. Going back and forth with these people, we get the best out of the idea we could.”
Seine berühmten längeren Gitarrensoli wird man auf Weightless nicht hören, die spart sich Andersen für seine Konzerte auf: „It’s fun to do, but on albums I want to focus on the songs more. I don’t want it to turn into something where every tune is a big wank. There’s just enough on the album that you can hear there’s some great playing, but it’s not a big instrumental feature. I don’t put myself out there as a guitarist; I think I’m more known for singing, and then guitar playing after that.”
Sieben Alben hat Matt Andersen bislang veröffentlicht, darunter ein Weihnachtsalbum, ein Livealbum und zwei Werke mit dem Mundharmonikaspieler Mike Stevens. Das Vorgängeralbum zu Weightless namens Coal Mining Blues aus dem Jahr 2011 wurde von Colin Linden produziert und in Levon Helms Studio in Woodstock, NY aufgenommen.
Eine Sache allerdings will Andersen in der nahen Zukunft nicht weiter verfolgen: auch wenn seine Version des Bill Withers‘ Klassikers „Ain’t No Sunshine“ bislang mehr als 940.000 Aufrufe bei YouTube bekommen hat, will er keine neuen Coverversionen in seine mehr als 200 Konzerte pro Jahr einbauen. Er begründet das folgendermaßen: „When I first started playing, I did a lot of bar gigs, just like anyone. Then when I transitioned into my own stuff, I didn’t have a whole lot of original material. And in terms of confidence, when you know what you can get out of a crowd by playing ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ it’s pretty easy to go with that to get their attention. I did that for a while; in retrospect, probably a bit too long. Now that ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ clip is most people’s introduction to me, what they’re drawn to—which is natural. It’s been a struggle, but I’ve shaken off the easy route and focused more on my own stuff at shows.”
