\u201e… elegant exercise in melancholy chamber folk\u201c \"Josienne<\/a>schrieb der britische Guardian<\/em> \u00fcber das hochgelobte britische Folk-Duo Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker. Am 14.10.2016 ver\u00f6ffentlichen die beiden ihr neues Album Overnight<\/em> auf CD und Vinyl sowie digital beim englischen Label Rough Trade \/ Beggars Group im Vertrieb von Indigo und Beggars New Media. Es ist das bis dato anspruchsvollste Album des Duos, das Clarkes Texte mit ihrer au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlichen Stimme und Walkers Arrangements mit seinem ausdrucksstarken Gitarrenspiel perfekt verbindet. Dazu kommen in den zw\u00f6lf St\u00fccken Instrumente wie Streicher, Bl\u00e4ser, Klavier, Kontrabass und Schlagzeug in Breitwand-Orchestrierungen. <\/p>\n

Neben Originalsongs bietet das Tracklisting eine Coverversion eines Gillian Welch-St\u00fccks sowie Bearbeitungen von St\u00fccken und \/ oder Texten von John Dowland, Jackson C. Frank und Ivor Gurney. Eingespielt wurden sie allesamt (fast komplett live) in den Rockfield Studios in Wales und sind so etwas wie Schnappsch\u00fcsse des endlosen Tageszeitenwechsels von der Nacht zum Tag und zur\u00fcck zur Nacht, vom Morgenlicht zum Halbdunkel des fr\u00fchen Abends, der schwarzen Nacht und zur\u00fcck zur grauen Morgend\u00e4mmerung. <\/p>\n

Die poppige Ballade \u201eThe Waning Crescent\u201c, die in Gro\u00dfbritannien als erste Single ausgekoppelt wird, ist so etwas wie eine Antwort auf die Darstellung des Mondes als einem tr\u00f6stenden Begleiter in der traditionellen und der popul\u00e4ren Musik wie z.B. im bekannten Song \u201eBlue Moon\u201c. Im dunkelsten und leisesten Moment des Albums bringt das St\u00fcck eine beruhigende Leichtigkeit, die Clarke folgenderma\u00dfen kommentiert: \u201eI started to think about if I was the moon, what I might think and feel, and what the moon might sing back. I\u2019ve given it a slightly whiny, self-pitying quality because it\u2019s whimsical and a bit funny.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u00dcber die musikalische Umsetzung des Songs sagt Josienne Clarke: \u201eWe\u2019ve done vignettes before where we’ve taken on a musical genre because that\u2019s what fits the concept of the song. On this one, we\u2019ve used the \u201850s and \u201860s space-race era pop sound to deliberately compound the moon theme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weitere Highlight-Tracks auf dem Album sind die Country-Soul-Ballade \u201eSomething Familiar\u201c und die wunderbare Coverversion des Gillian Welch-Titels \u201eDark Turn Of Mind\u201c, der gespenstisch anmutende Folkansatz in St\u00fccken wie \u201eDawn Of The Dark\u201c und \u201eThe Light Of His Lamp\u201c und die zum traditionellen Folk tendierenden Songs \u201eSweet The Sorrow\u201c und \u201eWeep You No More Sad Fountains\u201c. Letzterer ist eine von John Dowland geschriebene Ballade f\u00fcr die Laute, hier in einer zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Form umgesetzt. <\/p>\n

Obwohl Clarke & Walkers fr\u00fchere Alben stark in der Folktradition verwurzelt sind \u2013 die beiden haben 2015 einen BBC Folk Award als \u201eBestes Duo\u201d gewonnen \u2013 bezieht Overnight<\/em> genauso viel Inspiration aus 1970er AM Radio-Rock von Fleetwood Mac oder Neil Young wie vom Folkrock einer Joni Mitchell oder Fairport Convention. <\/p>\n

Das Duo ist in Gro\u00dfbritannien und den USA ab Mitte August 2016 auf gro\u00dfer Tournee. In Deutschland gibt es bislang einen best\u00e4tigten Termin:<\/p>\n

Hintergrund:<\/strong>
\nJosienne Clarke stammt aus Sussex und Ben Walker aus Evesham. Beide studierten in London und trafen sie sich per Zufall im Juli 2009. Gemeinsam formten sie ihren ureigenen Weg in der traditionellen Musik, der von Musikern wie Sandy Denny, Richard und Linda Thompson, Nick Drake, Bert Jansch oder June Tabor beeinflusst wurde. <\/p>\n

Die Presse in ihrem Heimatland England jubelte ihnen bald zu und die beiden erhielten Auszeichnungen wie den Isambard Folk Award, den FATEA Award f\u00fcr das \u201ebeste Album\u201c und die \u201ebeste Vokalistin\u201c des Jahres sowie den Spiral Earth Award als \u201ebestes Duo\u201c sowie Nominierungen als \u201ebeste Newcomer\u201c und \u201ebestes Duo\u201c beim renommierten BBC Radio 2 Folk Award 2014; letzteren gewann das Duo im darauf folgenden Jahr.<\/p>\n
