Solo-Studioalbum dachte \"\"<\/a>sich der legend\u00e4re britische Musiker Robyn Hitchcock gemeinsam mit dem noch legend\u00e4reren Produzenten Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, R.E.M.) etwas Besonderes aus: ein Album, das zur H\u00e4lfte aus Coverversionen und zur anderen H\u00e4lfte aus Hitchcocks eigenen Songs besteht. \u201eThis album started with Joe and me in a car,\u201d sagt Hitchcock, \u201cand therefore in a very confined space. Joe said, \u201aWhat you want to do is make an album like Judy Collins did in 1967.\u2019 I thought, wow, so that\u2019s what I want to do.“ <\/p>\n

So stehen auf dem Album The Man Upstairs<\/em>, das am 29.08.2014 bei Yep Roc Records ver\u00f6ffentlicht wird, neben Hitchcocks neuen Kompositionen bekannte Cover-St\u00fccke wie \u201eThe Crystal Ship\u201c von The Doors, \u201eTo Turn You On\u201c von Roxy Music oder \u201eThe Ghost In You\u201c von den Psychedelic Furs, die hier von ihrem Bekanntheitsballast komplett befreit und als melancholische und \u201enackte\u201c Folkballaden neu gedacht werden. Dazu kommen zwei weniger vertraute Songs von Grant-Lee Phillips (\u201eDon\u2019t Look Down\u201c) und der norwegischen Indie-Pop-Band I Was A King (\u201eFerries) \u2013 alles St\u00fccke, von denen Hitchcock sagt, dass \u201eer sie selbst gerne geschrieben h\u00e4tte\u201c und weiter: \u201eOften other people\u2019s songs capture emotion in a way that one\u2019s own songs can\u2019t. I feel like my emotional palette is limited \u2013 every songwriter\u2019s is in a way. We talk with our own emotional spectrum and it only goes across so many degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201eIt\u2019s basically just liberating the songs from how they were originally presented,\u201d so Hitchcock \u00fcber den Entstehungsprozess der Coverversionen: \u201eThe Psychedelic Furs song or the Roxy Music song, they were very state of the art pieces of 80s production \u2013 that snare drum you can land a plane on and all the rest of it. They were digital wonders of their time. It\u2019s great to be able to perform them with acoustic instruments, live, with little or no overdubs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hitchcocks eigene neue Songs sind zum Teil \u00fcber mehrere Jahrzehnte und auf mehr als einem Kontinent entstanden. All ihnen gemein ist, dass sie sich Themen wie der Sterblichkeit und Endlichkeit sowie der M\u00e4nnlichkeit annehmen. Songs wie \u201eTrouble In Your Blood\u201c, das in Norwegen geboren wurde, in Nashville reifte und erst sp\u00e4ter so richtig rund wurde oder \u201eComme Toujours\u201c, das Hitchcock im Jahr 1980 mit Bryan Ferry als Inspiration anfing zu schreiben und erst drei\u00dfig Jahre sp\u00e4ter fertigstellte, geh\u00f6ren zu den zerbrechlich-sch\u00f6nsten Aufnahmen, die Hitchcock jemals geschrieben hat. <\/p>\n

\u201eYet another autumnal record,\u201d sagt Hitchcock selbst \u00fcber das Album: \u201eYet another elegiac record. It\u2019s reminiscent of I Often Dream Of Trains<\/em> \u2013 there\u2019s a lot of autumn on that record as well. It was me, half the age I am now, already kind of nostalgic, already anticipating middle age.\u201c<\/p>\n

Boyds eher traditionelle Herangehensweise an das Album gab Hitchcock die Freiheit, sich einfach auf den Gesang zu konzentrieren statt sich best\u00e4ndig Gedanken dar\u00fcber zu machen, wie die Songs sich entwickeln w\u00fcrden oder sollten. Dazu sagt Hitchcock: \u201eThey\u2019re probably the most unselfconscious vocals I\u2019ve done. I was allowed some reverb and delay, but no doubling. I don\u2019t have my usual disguises so even though I\u2019m doing other people\u2019s songs half the time, it\u2019s probably much more me<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aufgenommen wurde The Man Upstairs<\/em> mit meist nur einem, h\u00f6chstens zwei Takes pro Song im Oktober 2013 in nur einer Woche im Londoner Snap Studio gemeinsam mit drei von Robyn Hitchcocks langj\u00e4hrigen musikalischen Mitstreitern: Jenny Adejayan (Cello), Charlie Francis (Klavier) und Anne Lise Fr\u00f8kedal (Harmoniegesang). \u201eYou don\u2019t do the song and then say to the audience, do you mind if we do that again?\u201d so Hitchcock: \u201eYou do one take and generally that works. The same should apply to making a record \u2013 if you\u2019re professional enough to play a song all the way through onstage without making a mistake, you should be able to do the same in the studio.\u201d <\/p>\n

Das Album bekam den sch\u00f6nen Titel The Man Upstairs<\/em> und die gro\u00dfartige Musikerin Gillian Welch konnte f\u00fcr das Cover-Artwork gewonnen werden.<\/p>\n
