Auf dem Album feiern K\u00fcnstler wie Angelique Kidjo, ?uestlove (The Roots), M1 (Dead Prez), tUnE-yArDs, Kronos Quartet, Baloji, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka oder Tony Allen in dreizehn grandiosen Neubearbeitungen Fela Kutis musikalisches Verm\u00e4chtnis. <\/p>\n

HINTERGRUND ZU RED HOT + FELA:<\/strong>
\nRed Hot ist eine Organisation, die sich der Aufkl\u00e4rung \u00fcber AIDS verschrieben hat und mit Kollaborateuren aus vielen musikalischen Genres zwischen Rock, HipHop, Americana und klassischer Musik zusammen getan hat, um die Compilation RED HOT + FELA<\/em> einzuspielen. Stuart Bogie von der Band Superhuman Happiness, der auf dem Album an den St\u00fccken „Sorrow Tears and Blood“ und „ITT“ mitgearbeitet hat, ist einer der K\u00fcnstler, der perfekt die Br\u00fccke zwischen den fr\u00fchen Anh\u00e4ngern des Afrobeat und den erst k\u00fcrzlich dazu gesto\u00dfenen Musikern schl\u00e4gt: „Fela’s music has deeply inspired and impacted how we think about music,“ sagt Bogie. „From critical details like his use of guitars and bass lines in perfect rhythmic counterpoint, to his long and epic forms, his music is a treasure and deep reason for musicians all over the globe.“ \u00dcber die Arbeit am Album sagt er weiter: „One challenge was maintaining the lyrical integrity. Fela’s poetry is a critical component, and we aren’t satisfied with getting it close – we want our tracks to honour his work the same as you would honour the lyrics of a Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Prince track.“<\/p>\n

Die Herangehensweise an jeden Track des Albums war eine andere – „Lady“ z.B. erweist der Tradition des Afrobeat die Ehre, w\u00e4hrend andere St\u00fccke in \u00e4u\u00dferst erfinderischer Weise vom Original abweichen. „No Buredi“ findet man hier von Nneka, Sinkane, Amayo und Superhuman Happiness als Electro-House-Track interpretiert, w\u00e4hrend „Yellow Fever“ durch Spoek Mathambo und Zaki Ibrahim ein zum Tanz auffordernder R&B-HipHop-Track wurde. Eine der spannendsten und eindringlichsten Neubearbeitungen ist sicherlich „Sorrow Tears and Blood“ von Kyp Malone und Tunde Adebimpe, Kronos Quartet und Stuart Bogie – ein reduzierter Take, der trotzdem extrem soulig, funky und „dicht“ her\u00fcberkommt. <\/p>\n

Fela Kuti ist selbst an den Folgen von AIDS verstorben, so dass die Partnerschaft zwischen Knitting Factory Records und der Organisation Red Hot eine ganz besondere Dimension hat. Bis zum heutigen Tag hat Red Hot achtzehn sehr unterschiedliche Alben ver\u00f6ffentlicht sowie Konzerte und Filme produziert, um das Bewusstsein f\u00fcr AIDS auf der ganzen Welt zu wecken und Gelder f\u00fcr Projekte zu sammeln. Das ist in Parnerschaft mit zahlreichen regionalen, nationalen und internationalen AIDS-Organisationen geschehen, an die die Einnahmen aus den Projekten flossen. <\/p>\n

Produziert wurde RED HOT + FELA<\/em> von Anthony Demby und Paul Heck f\u00fcr die Red Hot Organisation. Paul Heck erkl\u00e4rt dazu: „We didn’t set out to make a ’nu sound of Africa‘ or a cheap, of the moment kind of album. We reached out to artists we loved, who were making deep and inspiring music. You can’t mess around with Fela. There’s too much poetry and spiritual force in the music. It’s hard to explain the life-long love affair that happens when you get into Fela Kuti’s music. It is eternal, you can’t ever deny it – you just love it. RED HOT + FELA<\/em> is not a sequel to Red Hot + Riot (2003). It’s a continuation, a desire to want to hear more. We wanted to hear new music in this new moment; to hear these incredible artists approaching these incredible songs. The artists on RED HOT + FELA got seriously down with Fela’s music and spirit on this album. My co-producer, Anthony Demby, and I are incredibly thankful and feel lucky to be involved with the artists on this fierce and beautiful album.“<\/p>\n
